Why Women Need More Than One Handbag

March 22nd, 2007

I’ve had men friends ask me this question loads of times and every time I give them the same answer… “The very same reason why we don’t wear pajamas to work, darling!”

To men, one handbag is enough to suit every occasion. To women, there’s a handbag of different design and color to suit different occasions. This clash of opinion has caused one too many closet-fights as it is. So, here are some reasons why women need more than one handbag.

• Black rules but….we’ll admit this. Black goes with everything…and I mean everything. From yellow casual clothing to grey corporate suits. You can take a black handbag shopping and also the very same black handbag into a meeting. If you want to blend in with the curtains, fine. If you don’t, you need something striking, bold and coordinate with whatever you are wearing.

• Shoulder bags look fashionable and professional but it’s just not right to take a shoulder bag to the beach. It’ll make you look dowdy and bland.

• Satchels are designed for women to carry their essential documents without having to lug around a clumsy ‘luggage’ of stuff everywhere. This works wonders when out shopping.

• The handbag print is also very important. You can carry your fun, funky and colorful handbags out for fun outings. And in the meantime, you can take the more serious ones to corporate functions. Imagine what people will think when you bring a ‘Mickey Mouse’ print handbag to a corporate meeting in China?

• Backpacks and luggage are for traveling, not shopping! It works just the same way and it’s pretty convenient too, we have to add, but it’s just not something you’d want to be seen lugging around.

• The clutch bag, on the other hand, is very convenient and chic but you can’t be carrying it to parties because you can’t exactly hang it over your shoulder. If that’s the case, you run the risk of leaving your handbag behind when it’s time to leave (with a little bit of booze in the blood, it’s not impossible)

• Finally, last but not least, women need different handbags for the very same reason why men like to look at women. In fact, it’s because men appreciate women’s ability to dress up and look nice – why in the world shouldn’t women dress up and look nice? Make perfect sense?

Organize Your Purse in 5 Minutes

March 21st, 2007

Does carrying around your heavy purse drive you crazy? Does it take forever to hunt for your ringing cell phone amidst the chaos inside? Are you carrying around receipts and coupons from years ago? It is time to do something about it!

Empty the contents of your purse onto a table or floor:

* Sort in 4 piles: garbage, reallocation, keep in purse, to be filed
* Start with obvious trash items like candy wrappers, tissues, old business cards and papers.. Take it straight to the trash when you are done cleaning out the purse. Once the purse is free of garbage move onto to what you know you will keep in your purse.
* Items to Keep: These should include keys, wallet, sunglasses in case, cell phone, PDA device, working pen, gum(or mints) , floss if you like and a toothbrush. You might also require a small tissue packet and a lip balm/gloss or lipstick and one hairclip or tie. If you plan to keep makeup place it in a small Ziploc bag. You may also want either a brush or comb. In a smaller side pocket you might keep a small pack of medication or feminine hygiene products.
* Items to reallocate would be things like kids toys, lint rollers, extra pens, pads of paper, cassette tapes, extra hairclips, combs, brushes, hairspray
* File any receipts, documents, appointment cards etc. right away as to avoid losing them altogether.

**Store groups of items in small snack size Ziploc bags. This makes hunting for lipgloss easy when you aren’t going through everything, but one bag.

Open up the wallet and do the same as you did with the purse.

* Remove any old coupons, receipts, papers, and throw them away.
* Find any appointment cards business cards that need to be filed and do so now. Find a home for foreign coins and bills.
* Keep all relevant cards, stamps, credit cards and your own country’s currency in a small amount. Make photocopies of all important credit cards and documentation in case you lose something.

Keep your purse and wallet organized by weekly going through it and removing receipts, trash, papers and cards that don’t belong. Remove all the pens you collect and see if you can’t make your purse lighter by dumping out the change and trading for bills at the bank or local coin changer. Store all baby and kids items in a separate diaper bag or knapsack as to not turn your handbag into a dumping ground.

The Handbag - A Logical History of Handbags and Purses

March 9th, 2007

Have you ever thought about the origin of the handbag and purse? Handbags are now an essential part of most women’s wardrobe and like shoes they command the high ground in terms of defining your look. Walk into a room with a Fendi or Chanel under your arm and you will be noticed no matter what else you are wearing. So where did it all begin and what is the origin of the handbag?

The Logical Origin of the Handbag

Pouches or bags are depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphs and there are many references to pouches throughout early history. But it really is common sense that there must have always been some sort of bag our pouch for us to carry our essential possessions in. We have only ever had a maximum of two hands and you can bet that we learnt very early on that if your hands are full you can’t do anything else like for example fight, hunt, farm or climb. So I think it goes without saying that ‘man’ has evolved with a bag on ‘his’ shoulder. So, whilst we are making bold assumptions lets assume that the only thing holding back the evolution of the bag was the available materials and methods of manufacture. If our predecessors had the where-with-all to make garments to keep themselves warm and protected they would have soon realised that if you take a small square of animal skin, put your stuff in it and tie the corners together you can now look after your valuables whilst on the move. They wouldn’t have called it a Hobo until the 1890’s!

OK, so having established that the handbag was limited by the available materials and methods of manufacture it is probably safe to conclude that the early pouches were lacking in functionality and other aspects (no not the available range of colours). So, continuing this downhill slide of assumptions. Someone is bound to have made their bag in a way that was better than the others. So this bag would have been a sought after item. Ah now we are getting close. So “I will make you handbag but you have to pay me in return” and it goes without saying that the best bags will command the highest price (human nature). But it will also be essential that those who have the best can be seen to have the best so that we all know who is on the top of the tree (human nature). So I want my bag to look different from theirs because I want them to know I have the best. So there are going to be are those who have it and those who want it because the others have it. Ah Fashion I think!

Fashion YES but still with a complete sensibility and practicality. During 14th, 15th,16th and 17th centuries clothing and handbags or purses were driven by a tangible need but limited by the development of materials and manufacture techniques. The quality of fabrics and leather improved and it goes again without saying that the rich had the best but importantly everyone else had to have something and therefore they either bought it or made it. The big change came in the 18th century when women’s clothing became far more delicate and removed the copious undergarments that had been used for so many years. This dropping of the underclothing, so to speak, also reduced the places where one could easily hide your pouch of essentials. A separate bag was required and it then became fashionable for ladies to carry a handbag which obviously had to match with the outfit! So the demand for coordinated handbags was created (but they weren’t called handbags until the early 1900’s). This move to a separate bag was a huge catalyst in fashion driven designer handbags.

Caroline is fanatical about designer handbags and has spent more that she wishes to admit on handbags over the years. So Caroline decided to share some of her knowledge and present reviews of new designs from her website at http://www.handbagsandco.com
